Jaden (Age 6)
VATER Syndrome
Before their baby boy was even born, Chris and Wade of Meridian, Idaho, were told that their son would not be well.
Jaden Carlsen was born with VATER syndrome, a group of physical problems. Jaden was also born with a hole in his heart, missing ribs, scoliosis and a fused spine. At just five days old, Jaden was given his first surgery at St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital—five more would follow.
“They said they didn’t know if Jaden would ever be able to feed himself, walk or even talk,” said Chris. “We count our blessings. We realize how lucky we are. We have a child who is walking and talking.”
Today, 6-year-old Jaden loves spending time outside playing with his sister. His favorite activities include riding his bicycle and scooter. He has approached each challenge with an “I can get through this” attitude. As his dad Wade puts it, “With Jaden around you can never get down. He’s so happy, even on his bad days, that it’s infectious.”
