Rolonzo (Age 17)
Stroke
In November 2006 Rolonzo showed up to his high school football practice just like any other day. Suddenly he collapsed in front of his teammates, suffering from a debilitating stroke.
Doctors were forced to remove a portion of his skull to relieve pressure in his brain and he was given a 40 percent chance of survival. Rolonzo spent two weeks in intensive care but made it through the worst. He was soon transferred to Children’s Hospital for rehabilitation. Rolonzo’s miraculous road to recovery can be attributed to his hard work and the unparalleled medical care from the dedicated team of physicians and therapists at Children’s Hospital.
“Ro is always pleasant and cooperative no matter what kind of day he’s having. He will try anything that is asked of him,” says Carol in occupational therapy. “He’s one of our hardest working patients. His initiative and self motivation are remarkable for a young man of his age.”
Rolonzo has been an inspiration to all who know him, including his community in New Orleans. You never see him go without a smile. Even on days when most would give up, this 17-year-old boy keeps going.
