Sierra (Age 9)
Brain Tumor
Sierra of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is an energetic 9-year-old girl who loves to run, play and dance. Thanks to experts at University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, Sierra is able to do all of this again since fighting a life-threatening brain tumor.
In February 2006, Sierra was diagnosed with Pilocytic Astrocytoma, a tumor located on her brainstem. She has been through two brain surgeries where doctors were able to surgically remove 50-75 percent of the tumor before starting 12 rounds of chemotherapy.
The first thing Sierra wanted to do after being released from the hospital was participate in the 2007 University of Iowa Dance Marathon. She begged and pleaded with the doctors to release her from the hospital so she could go—she wouldn’t miss dancing for anything.
Everyone Sierra meets calls her a “charmer” and she bedazzles audiences of all sorts. She is an outgoing child who loves crafting, child life, travel and her friends.
