Tristen (Age 5)
Multiple Birth Defects
During the first year of his life, Tristen underwent multiple surgeries for a G-tube placement, an umbilical hernia repair, bilateral heel cord release and repair to a deformed thumb. This sweet boy was born with multiple birth defects, including severe laryngeal tracheomalacia, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, dysphagia, congenital scoliosis and clubfeet (among others).
Now at just 5 years old, Tristen’s life is a constant battle. He has permanent ambulation problems and lower body control, for which he needs continuous physical, occupational and speech therapies.
But Tristen doesn’t let his physical disabilities slow him down. While he works hard to do simple tasks, such as walk and play and speak, he does it all with a positive attitude.
One of his therapists recounts her favorite Tristen story: “I’ll never forget the day his mom told me about Tristen asking his girlfriend on a date. He told her they would have to go to Walmart or therapy because those are the only places he goes. She chose Walmart!”
Tristen loves to interact with other children, and he’s loved for his charming smile and infectious giggle.
Ariel, 11, is now able to participate in cheerleading and gymnastics. She loves to read, write, cook and design clothes and jewelry.
